Rimless glasses or spectacle frames? Which one should you choose to be in tune with today’s fashion? Edinburgh eyewear specialist, Spectacles Direct examines why you might choose one over the other.
Silhouette Custom-Made Rimless Glasses – Understated Elegance
Silhouette custom-made glasses are the new eyewear of choice for the rich, the famous and the image conscious. In an age where sartorial elegance has made a sweeping comeback, courtesy of designers such as Tom Ford, it was only a matter of time before eyewear became more individual. After all, if you’re having a suit or dress individually tailored why shouldn’t your spectacles be bespoke too?

The beauty of Silhouette glasses is that the lenses can be shaped to your own design. They’re also rimless which means they’re perfectly in tune with today’s trend towards minimalism – an age in which functional, yet discreet Apple and Fitbit watches are must-haves – a far cry from the 80’s ‘greed is good’ chunky look of Rolex.
Many of today’s movie stars, environmentally aware and keen to relate more easily to a more enlightened fan base, are steering clear of grand shows of excess, opting instead for discretion and style. Silhouette eyewear fits this ethos perfectly. There’s no visible brand name, but the lenses are instantly recognisable by their unique designs and stars such as Patrick Dempsey, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett are happy to endorse Silhouette either through an advertising agreement or by simply wearing them.

Ray-Ban hits Cruise-Control
Does this mean that spectacle frames are yesterday’s news? Far from it. Some spectacle frame brands are too iconic to ever go out of style. Take Ray-Ban for instance. After decades of being the eyewear of choice for mega-stars such as Humphrey Bogart, James Dean and Marlon Brando, the company hit a crushing slump in sales when fickle fashionistas ditched Ray-Ban in favour of cheap, oversized frames in the 70’s. Then in 1983, up stepped a fresh-faced Tom Cruise in the movie Risky Business, sporting a classic pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers and all but saved the company.
Top Gun was next in 1986. Ray-Ban Aviators took to the skies in style…and so did the company’s revenues. The triple-whammy concluded in 1988 with two for the price of one when Dustin Hoffman joined screen-brother Cruise in matching suits, tie-less shirts buttoned to the neck and of course…Ray-Bans. Rain Man in Ray-Bans set the company on course for greater success than ever.
Cruise has now announced Top Gun: Maverick, the much-anticipated sequel to the original cult movie so hold on to your joystick, because whichever sunglasses brand Tom’s about to promote this time around, should see sales move faster than an F-14 Tomcat!
So, which are more fashionable - rimless or frames? It depends entirely on your individual taste, which stars you prefer and most of all, the style that suits you the most.
