Prada’s success as a fashion brand began when Muccia Prada, granddaughter of founder, Mario Prada, took the helm in 1978. Muccia Prada, a former member of the Italian Communist Party and a trained mime artist with a Ph.D in political science was an unlikely successor to the family business. However, even with no formal training in fashion design, Muccia Prada has successfully turned what was a family business making high-end luggage products for Milan’s elite, into a billion-dollar fashion house. At a time when products were logo heavy, Muccia Prada, with no formal fashion-design training took an altogether different and fresher approach. She launched a new range of understated handbags and backpacks closely followed by a range of women’s clothes which she called ‘uniforms for the slightly disenfranchised.’ Her non-conformist attitude made her an instant hit for fashion critics eager for something different. She has always blazed her own trail – a true individual and continues to lead the way today with the Prada range of eyewear.
